What is Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry, also known as sedation dentistry, involves using various medications to alter your level of consciousness, making dental procedures more comfortable. In simple terms, we can safely put you to sleep or relax you significantly, so you can complete dental work with minimal stress.

Dental Sedation Options at our Kalispell, MT, Dental Office

We offer a range of sedation options, each tailored to meet our patient’s unique needs and comfort levels. Below are the sedation methods available, listed in order of increasing “sleepiness.”

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a mild sedative inhaled through a mask. It helps reduce anxiety and makes dental work more comfortable. The effects wear off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home after your appointment. This option is ideal for routine procedures like cleanings, fillings, and children’s appointments.

Oral Sedatives

Oral sedatives offer a more substantial level of anxiety reduction compared to nitrous oxide. Taken in pill form, these medications can help you feel more relaxed and, in some cases, drowsy. However, the effects can vary from person to person; one patient might feel slightly sleepy, while another might fall asleep completely. Because of the unpredictability of oral sedatives, you will need a driver to bring you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedatives

Intravenous (IV) sedation, often referred to as “sleep dentistry,” is a more controlled and deeper form of sedation. At our Kalispell office, we hold a special permit to offer IV sedation, allowing us to manage your level of consciousness safely and effectively.

This option is perfect for patients undergoing surgical procedures, those who wish to complete multiple treatments in one visit, or those who simply don’t want to be awake during their dental work. Unlike oral sedatives, IV sedation allows our dentists to make precise adjustments to the depth of sedation. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

Special Considerations

It’s important to note that, except for nitrous oxide, we don’t sedate children under the age of 13. This policy also extends to individuals with severe medical conditions, as their health and safety are our top priorities.

Benefits of Sleep Dentistry

Sleep dentistry offers numerous benefits, including:

  1. Reduced Anxiety: Sedation helps alleviate the fear and anxiety often associated with dental visits.
  2. Comfort: Patients experience minimal discomfort, even during lengthy procedures.
  3. Efficiency: Complex or multiple treatments can be completed in a single visit, saving time and reducing the need for multiple appointments.
  4. Improved Dental Health: By minimizing fear, patients are more likely to seek necessary dental care, leading to better oral health.
